UNESCO International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition - St Cecilia’s Hall, Edinburgh
23rd August 2025
Shakthi is a collaborative creation by Anoop Menon and Jiji Rajagopal, in partnership with Carnatic musician Preetha Nirmala. Submitted as part of UNESCO’s International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition, the project was selected by the Creative Contributions Commissioning Panel and showcased on 23rd August at St Cecilia’s Hall.
Rooted in classical Indian performing arts, the production brings to light the rich spiritual traditions of Indo-Caribbean Shaktism while reflecting on the enduring shadows of exploitation across history. Through expressive Bharatanatyam by Anoop Menon & Jiji Rajagopal and evocative musical storytelling by Preetha Nirmala, the performance follows Shakthi—a fictional deity who bears witness to centuries of struggle, resilience and transformation.
